What inspires you about being a business owner?

WHAT WAS THE CATALYST FOR YOU TO OPEN YOUR BUSINESS?

Owner: Samantha (She/Her)

I opened my business in the summer of 2020, during the pandemic. Baking is in my blood and I have enjoyed baking for years. During the pandemic, I did a lot of home baking and posting on social media and everyone kept asking when they could get some of the goodies. I grew up in Detroit, MI hearing about the bakery that my great-grandfather owned. When I started researching it more, I found out that my great-great grandmother actually started the original Buyse’s Bakery in Detroit in the early 1900’s. I love the idea of a strong woman business owner, in a time when women didn’t own businesses, and it inspired me to take a leap and re-open Buyse’s Bakery in Colorado. Thanks to the Colorado Cottage Foods Act, I opened as a home-based bakery in June 2020 and am so excited to celebrate our 1st anniversary and all of the success we have had!

What is a struggle you overcame?

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR BETTIES WHO MAY BE GOING THROUGH A SIMILAR SITUATION?

I have struggled, and still struggle with, being confident in my work. As a self-trained baker, I see pictures on social media of other peoples’ work and think, ” Wow, they are so much better than me.” or “Why would people pay me for this when they could have that person’s work instead?” or “My work isn’t as good as theirs…I should charge less.” But just like Instagram filters on models, everything you see on social media is not as it seems. And my work is good enough. I know my products taste delicious and I do deserve to be paid for my work. So whether you are struggling with comparing your body or your looks to people on social media, or comparing your skills and expertise, you just have to keep in mind that you are the best version of YOU. And when you put your heart and soul into your work, it shows!

what is one way you enjoy taking care of yourself outside of your business?

I love family game nights with my husband and 7-year-old son. We love to play all kinds of board games and card games. One of our favorites when we all need a good laugh is Pie Face!

How do you currently help the local community?

I am a member of two organizations that donate cakes, cupcakes and cookies to children will critical illnesses and children in foster homes. I donate custom cakes to create positive memories for children during difficult times in their lives.
