What inspires you about being a business owner?
WHAT WAS THE CATALYST FOR YOU TO OPEN YOUR BUSINESS?
Owner: Brittany (she/her/hers)
I love being a business owner because I get to create this beautiful thing that didn’t exist before! Skating with people and seeing their smiles brings so much joy to my life, I can’t imagine living without it. That still inspires me every day, and it’s what got the business started in the first place! After leaving roller derby, I knew that I had to find a way to keep skating and teaching because I was never going to just do it on my own. I wanted something with a balance of accountability and freedom, a place I could access that feeling of joy without the chance to make excuses and put it off until tomorrow.
What is a struggle you overcame?
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE F0R BETTIES WHO MAY BE GOING THROUGH A SIMILAR SITUATION?
Learning to manage my own time as a small business owner after working retail for 12 years was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. The advice about “productivity” is endless and can be super toxic. Like if you aren’t hustling and grinding 24 hours a day, you’re a failure. Completely changing the way that your life is structured is a huge adjustment, and it may take you a long time to start to feel like it’s actually working. Be nice to yourself in the process! Your value as a person does NOT have anything to do with how productive you are.
what is one way you enjoy taking care of yourself outside of your business?
I love getting back in bed in the middle of the day to read and/or nap… It feels so subversive and luxurious. Shout out to Tricia Hersey of The Nap Ministry, who is doing the most incredible and important work.
How do you currently help the local community?
The physical and emotional benefits of exercise and friendship are well documented, yet so many people are starving for both. We offer an opportunity for people to take time for themselves, move their bodies in a way that feels good, and be part of a loving and supportive community.
